Prerequisites

The Hook: A Notice the Village Can Read

Connect

A block office near Mahasamund has a Hindi notice for the gram panchayat board: “कल सुबह गाँव के स्कूल में बच्चों को टीका लगेगा। सभी माता-पिता अपने बच्चों को लेकर आएँ।” The officer wants a Chhattisgarhi version so that every parent, not just the literate few, understands it at a glance.

A word-by-word swap gives something stiff and half-Hindi. A good translation sounds like the village speaking: “काली बिहनिया गाँव के इसकूल म लइकामन ला टीका लगही। जम्मो दाई-ददा अपन लइकामन ला ले के आवव।”

How do you get from the first version to the second, reliably and fast, in an exam hall?

Why it matters for CGPSC: translation from Hindi to Chhattisgarhi and from Chhattisgarhi to Hindi is named in the Mains Paper I Chhattisgarhi syllabus, and it is the most predictable way to score in that part. In Prelims Paper II, many questions are sentence-level: “which is the correct Chhattisgarhi form?” or “what does this sentence mean?”. The same method answers both.

Which forms to write
Use the central-plains forms from the grammar page and keep them consistent through the answer. Regional forms (मा for म, मँय for मैं) are acceptable if you do not mix systems inside one passage.

Chhattisgarhi → Hindi: The Reverse Method

Going back into Hindi, you must put back what Chhattisgarhi leaves out:

RestoreWhyChhattisgarhiHindi
नेHindi needs ने with a transitive verb in the pastदाई भात रांधिसमाँ ने खाना पकाया
Gender in the verbHindi verbs agree in gender; take it from the subject or contextटूरी काली रइपुर गिसलड़की कल रायपुर गई
का / के / कीChoose by the gender and number of the possessed nounराम के बेटीराम की बेटी

Standard Hindi wordsReplace regional wordsलइकामन, तरियाबच्चे, तालाब
When the gender is not stated
“ओ बजार गिस” can be “वह बाज़ार गया” or “वह बाज़ार गई”. If the passage gives no clue, use the masculine and stay consistent; if an earlier sentence names a woman or girl, the feminine is required. Examiners check exactly this.

Worked Passage 1: Chhattisgarhi → Hindi

Passage (Chhattisgarhi)
हमर गाँव नदिया तीर हे। गाँव म एक बड़का तरिया हे। बिहनिया ले किसानमन खेत जाथें अउ लइकामन इसकूल जाथें। संझा जम्मो लइका तरिया म नहाथें। रतिहा जम्मो मनखे भात खा के सुतथें।
Model Hindi translation and notes

हमारा गाँव नदी के किनारे है। गाँव में एक बड़ा तालाब है। सुबह से किसान खेत जाते हैं और बच्चे स्कूल जाते हैं। शाम को सब बच्चे तालाब में नहाते हैं। रात को सब लोग खाना खाकर सोते हैं।

(English: Our village is on the bank of a river. There is a big pond in the village. From the morning the farmers go to the fields and the children go to school. In the evening all the children bathe in the pond. At night everyone eats and goes to sleep.)

Points the examiner looks for:

  • तीर → के किनारे / के पास (not a literal “arrow”).
  • -मन plurals → Hindi plurals (किसानमन → किसान, लइकामन → बच्चे).
  • जाथें, नहाथें, सुतथें → habitual present: जाते हैं, नहाते हैं, सोते हैं.
  • संझा, रतिहा need को in Hindi: शाम को, रात को.
  • भात खा के → खाना खाकर (भात here means the meal, not only rice).

Worked Passage 2: Hindi → Chhattisgarhi

Passage (Hindi)
मेरी माँ सुबह जल्दी उठती है। वह भात पकाती है। बड़ा भाई बैलों को लेकर खेत जाता है। मैं स्कूल जाता हूँ। शाम को हम सब साथ बैठकर खाना खाते हैं।
Model Chhattisgarhi translation and notes

मोर दाई बिहनिया जल्दी उठथे। ओ भात रांधथे। भइया बइलामन ला ले के खेत जाथे। मैं इसकूल जाथँव। संझा हमन जम्मो झन संग म बइठ के भात खाथन।

Points the examiner looks for:

  • उठती है → उठथे, पकाती है → रांधथे: habitual -थ-, and no feminine ending.
  • बैलों को → बइलामन ला: plural -मन plus the object marker ला.
  • लेकर → ले के, बैठकर → बइठ के: the -के participle.
  • जाता हूँ → जाथँव, खाते हैं (हम) → खाथन: person endings.
  • हम सब → हमन जम्मो झन: झन here counts people (“all of us”).

Idioms and Proverbs in Translation

Never translate a proverb word for word. Find the equivalent proverb in the other language, or give the meaning plainly.

Chhattisgarhi hanaHindi equivalentMeaning
नाचे ल न जाने, अँगना टेड़गानाच न जाने आँगन टेढ़ाblaming circumstances for one’s own lack of skill
दुब्बर बर दू असाढ़दुबले को दो आषाढ़troubles pile up on those already weak

Proverbs often keep older or regional forms (ल for ला), so quote them as they are. For more, see Idioms and Proverbs (Muhavare and Hana).

Memory Tricks

The six swaps: 'Pronoun, Ne, Case, Verb, Word, Sound'
Hindi → Chhattisgarhi always runs in the same order: Pronoun, Ne out, Case markers, Verb ending, Word swap, Sound softening. Read it as “Please Never Copy Verbs Word-by-word, Sir.”
Going back: 'Ne, Gender, Kal'
Chhattisgarhi → Hindi: put back ने, put back gender, and decide which कल काली means. Three checks before you write the final line.

Don’t Confuse

ThisvsThat
Hindi → Chhattisgarhi: delete ने, delete genderChhattisgarhi → Hindi: restore ने, restore gender
तीर = near, on the bank ofHindi तीर = arrow (also “bank” in literary Hindi)
भात in a sentence about eating often = the mealभात in a recipe or market = cooked rice specifically
ले के = having taken (लेकर)ले alone = from (से)

Common Mistakes

Trap 1: Word-for-word Hindi with Chhattisgarhi endings
“सीता ने चिट्ठी लिखी हे” keeps Hindi grammar under a thin Chhattisgarhi coat. Rebuild the verb from the stem: सीता चिट्ठी लिखिस.
Trap 2: Losing gender on the way back
“टूरी इसकूल गिस” translated as “लड़की स्कूल गया” is a grammatical error in Hindi. The subject टूरी tells you: गई.
Trap 3: Mixing persons
“हमन जाथे” or “मैं जाबो” mixes the subject with the wrong ending. Check every verb against its subject: मैं जाथँव / जाहूँ, हमन जाथन / जाबो.
Trap 4: Leaving Hindi vocabulary in place
A Chhattisgarhi answer full of “बहुत”, “बच्चे”, “सुबह”, “तालाब” reads as Hindi. Swap to अब्बड़, लइकामन, बिहनिया, तरिया wherever a common Chhattisgarhi word exists.

Practice

These are original practice questions in CGPSC style. They are not previous-year questions.

Level 1: Foundation

  1. Translate into Chhattisgarhi: “मैं पानी पी रहा हूँ।”
  2. Translate into Hindi: “ओकर दाई इसकूल म पढ़ाथे।”
  3. Translate into Chhattisgarhi: “बच्चों के लिए आम लाओ।”
  4. Which Hindi word must you add when translating “ददा भात खाइस” into Hindi?
Answers
  1. मैं पानी पीयत हँव। (continuous: -त + हँव). Spellings such as पियत / पीयत both occur.
  2. उसकी माँ स्कूल में पढ़ाती है। (ओकर → उसकी because माँ is feminine.)
  3. लइकामन बर आमा लान।
  4. ने: पिता ने खाना (भात) खाया।

Level 2: Prelims MCQs

Q1. The correct Chhattisgarhi translation of “मैं कल रायपुर जाऊँगा” is:

(a) मैं काली रइपुर गेंव। (b) मैं काली रइपुर जाहूँ। (c) मैं काली रइपुर जाबो। (d) मैं ने काली रइपुर जाहूँ।

Answer: (b)
Future, first person singular: जाहूँ. Option (a) is past (“I went”), (c) uses the “we” ending जाबो, and (d) adds a Hindi ने that Chhattisgarhi never uses.

Q2. The correct Hindi translation of “टूरी पढ़े बर इसकूल गिस” is:

(a) लड़का पढ़ने के लिए स्कूल गया। (b) लड़की ने पढ़कर स्कूल गई। (c) लड़की पढ़ने के लिए स्कूल गई। (d) लड़की पढ़ने स्कूल जाती है।

Answer: (c)
टूरी = लड़की, so the Hindi verb must be feminine (गई); पढ़े बर = पढ़ने के लिए; गिस = past. Option (a) gets the gender wrong, (b) adds an impossible ने with an intransitive verb, and (d) changes the tense to habitual present.

Q3. Consider the following statements about translating between Hindi and Chhattisgarhi:

  1. When translating a Chhattisgarhi past-tense sentence with a transitive verb into Hindi, ने usually has to be added.
  2. काली should always be translated as “आने वाला कल” (tomorrow).
  3. Hindi मत (as in “मत जाओ”) is rendered in Chhattisgarhi by झन.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

(a) 1 only (b) 1 and 3 only (c) 2 and 3 only (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (b) 1 and 3 only
Statement 1 is correct: Chhattisgarhi drops ने (राम भात खाइस), so Hindi needs it back (राम ने भात खाया). Statement 3 is correct: झन जा = मत जाओ. Statement 2 is wrong: like Hindi कल, काली means yesterday or tomorrow depending on the verb’s tense.

Q4. Match List-I (Hindi word) with List-II (Chhattisgarhi word):

List-IList-II
A. बहुत1. रुख
B. सुबह2. लइका
C. बच्चा3. अब्बड़
D. पेड़4. बिहनिया

(a) A-3, B-4, C-2, D-1 (b) A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1 (c) A-3, B-4, C-1, D-2 (d) A-2, B-4, C-3, D-1

Answer: (a) A-3, B-4, C-2, D-1
बहुत → अब्बड़, सुबह → बिहनिया, बच्चा → लइका, पेड़ → रुख. These four swaps alone turn many Hindi sentences into natural Chhattisgarhi.

Q5. कोन वाक्य म व्याकरण के गलती हे?

(a) ओ घर म रहिस। (b) मोर संग चल। (c) राम ने भात खाइस। (d) लइकामन तरिया म नहावत हें।

Answer: (c)
राम ने भात खाइस mixes Hindi ने with a Chhattisgarhi verb; the correct form is राम भात खाइस. The other three are standard Chhattisgarhi: “He was at home”, “Come with me”, “The children are bathing in the pond”.

Level 3: Speed Drill — Solve in 60 Seconds

Translate into Chhattisgarhi. Target: all six in 60 seconds.

  1. वह स्कूल जाती है। 2. तुम क्या कर रहे हो? 3. मोहन ने आम खाया।
  2. मत डरो। 5. हम पेड़ के नीचे बैठेंगे। 6. उसका घर तालाब के पास है।

Then translate into Hindi in 30 seconds: 7. दाई बजार ले आइस। 8. लइकामन काली इसकूल नइ गिन।

Answers with the rule used
  1. ओ इसकूल जाथे। (no feminine ending)
  2. तैं का करत हस? (का = क्या; continuous -त)
  3. मोहन आमा खाइस। (no ने; आम → आमा)
  4. झन डर। (झन = मत)
  5. हमन रुख के तरी बइठबो। (future “we” -बो)
  6. ओकर घर तरिया तीर हे। (तीर = के पास)
  7. माँ बाज़ार से आई। (feminine restored: आई)
  8. बच्चे कल स्कूल नहीं गए। (past tense → कल = yesterday)

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways
  1. Translate meaning first, then apply the six swaps: pronoun, ने, case, verb, word, sound.
  2. Into Chhattisgarhi, delete ने and gender; into Hindi, restore both.
  3. The verb is the most-marked element: check tense marker (-थ-, -त, -इस, -ही) and person ending against the subject.
  4. Prefer common Chhattisgarhi words (अब्बड़, लइका, बिहनिया, तरिया) over Hindi ones, and keep one regional form throughout.
  5. Proverbs move as whole units: equivalent proverb or plain meaning.
