The Hook: The Padma List Is a Map of the State
Look at Chhattisgarh’s Padma awardees in the arts and you can trace the map of the state: Teejan Bai from Ganiyari near Bhilai in the plains, Ajay Kumar Mandavi from Kanker and Pandi Ram Mandavi from Narayanpur in the Bastar forests, and Panthi and Pandavani performers from the Satnami and Pardhi traditions in between. Every January, when the Padma list is announced, a CGPSC aspirant should ask: who from Chhattisgarh is on it, and for what?
Who are the artists every CGPSC aspirant must know, and what is each one known for?
Why it matters: “Name – art form – award year” questions are common in the Chhattisgarh part of Prelims P-I, and recent Padma awards are current-affairs favourites. In Mains and the interview, naming the right artist makes an answer on culture concrete.

Analysis: What These Lives Teach (Mains GS-IV and Interview)
- Social mobility through art. Teejan Bai came from a poor Pardhi family and had little schooling; art made her a national figure. Folk forms can open doors that formal systems close.
- Gender barriers. She performed Kapalik Pandavani, then a male domain, and faced social criticism for it. Usha Barle and Ritu Verma followed her into the form.
- Community reform. Devdas Banjare and Radheshyam Barle carried the Satnami ethic of equality to wider audiences through Panthi.
- Folk and modern together. Habib Tanvir showed that village actors and folk forms could create modern, world-class theatre.
- Recognition reaches the margins. Padma awards to Bastar craftsmen (2023, 2025) show growing recognition of tribal artists from conflict-affected districts.
- The gap: for every awardee, hundreds of performers and artisans live with irregular income, no pension and no documentation of their repertoire.
Memory Tricks
- Barle: Radheshyam = Panthi (2021); Usha = Pandavani (2023).
- Mandavi: Ajay = Kanker wood carving (2023); Pandi Ram = Narayanpur wood and Sulur flute (2025).

Level 3: Mains Answer Writing
Q1. Write a short note on Teejan Bai’s contribution to Indian folk culture. (100 words)
Intro: Teejan Bai (1956 – 5 July 2026), from Ganiyari near Bhilai, was the foremost Pandavani artist.
Points:
- First woman to perform in the improvised Kapalik style; broke a gender barrier.
- Took Pandavani from village fairs to world stages and to TV (Bharat Ek Khoj).
- Trained and inspired a new generation of women performers.
- Padma Shri (1988), Padma Bhushan (2003), Padma Vibhushan (2019).
Conclusion: She made a regional ballad form a national symbol of Chhattisgarh.
Q2. “State recognition of folk artists is necessary but not sufficient to keep folk traditions alive.” Discuss with examples from Chhattisgarh. (200 words)
Intro: Chhattisgarh’s folk artists have received national honours, from Teejan Bai’s Padma Vibhushan to Padma Shris for Bastar craftsmen.
Why recognition matters: visibility and markets (Pandi Ram Mandavi, Ajay Kumar Mandavi); dignity for marginalised communities (Panthi, Radheshyam Barle); inspiring the young (women in Pandavani after Teejan Bai); state honours (Dau Mandraji Samman, Chakradhar Samman).
Why it is not enough:
- Awards reach a few; most performers lack steady income and pensions.
- Repertoires remain undocumented.
- Audiences shift to cinema and digital media.
- Ritual contexts (Ghotul, village festivals) are weakening.
What else is needed: archives and digital documentation, guru-shishya stipends, school and university curricula (Khairagarh), regular village-level performance funding, and fair markets for crafts.
Conclusion: Honours celebrate the summit; traditions survive only if the base of ordinary performers is supported.
