Location, Extent and Boundaries of Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh's latitude-longitude extent, area and rank, the Tropic of Cancer and IST meridian, and the seven neighbouring states for CGPSC Prelims and Mains.
Prerequisites
- Formation of the State and Administrative Structure: why the state’s borders are the borders of the old south-eastern Madhya Pradesh
- Physiography of India: where the Peninsular plateau, the Chota Nagpur plateau and the Eastern Ghats lie
- Indian Climate: what the Tropic of Cancer and the Standard Meridian mean for a place
The Hook: One State, Seven Neighbours
A truck leaving Raipur can reach seven different states without crossing a sea or a foreign border: Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Up north, near Ambikapur and Surajpur, the Tropic of Cancer (कर्क रेखा) runs through the hills. Down south in Sukma, you are closer to Bhadrachalam than to Bilaspur.
So where exactly is Chhattisgarh on the map, how big is it, and who are its neighbours?
Why it matters: Prelims tests the exact coordinates, the area rank, the neighbouring-state count, the longest and shortest boundaries and the Tropic of Cancer districts. Mains GS-III uses location to explain the state’s climate, river systems and mineral wealth.
Location
Chhattisgarh (छत्तीसगढ़) lies in east-central India. It is a landlocked state, with no coastline, and sits on the north-eastern part of the Peninsular plateau. Its northern hills are an extension of the Chota Nagpur plateau and the Baghelkhand plateau. Its southern part, Bastar, belongs to the Dandakaranya (दण्डकारण्य) region.
Extent (अक्षांशीय एवं देशांतरीय विस्तार)
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Latitude | 17°46′ N to 24°5′ N |
| Longitude | 80°15′ E to 84°24′ E |
| North–south length | Roughly 700–800 km (figures vary by source) |
| East–west width | About 435 km at its widest |
| Shape | Long north–south, narrow east–west; often compared to a seahorse (समुद्री घोड़ा) on the map |
- Tropic of Cancer (23°30′ N): passes through the northern districts of Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, Koriya, Surajpur and Balrampur. Before the 2022 district reorganisation, older books list only Koriya, Surajpur and Balrampur (and before 2012, Koriya and Surguja). Always read the district list against its date.
- Indian Standard Meridian (82°30′ E): also passes through the state. The two lines cross in the northern hills of Chhattisgarh. Guides place the crossing in the Koriya–Surajpur area; check the current district map before you commit to one district in an answer.
Area
| Fact | Detail |

| Divisions / districts | 5 divisions, 33 districts (as of 2026) |
Boundaries: Seven Neighbouring States

| North | Uttar Pradesh |
| North-east | Jharkhand |
| East | Odisha (the longest boundary) |
| South | Telangana |
| South (south-east tip) | Andhra Pradesh (the shortest boundary) |

- Central position, inland connectivity: the state sits on the Howrah–Mumbai rail corridor and between the eastern ports (Visakhapatnam, Paradip) and the central Indian market. This suits bulk industries such as steel, cement, power and aluminium.
- Geology follows location: being on the old Peninsular block gives the state Gondwana coal in the north, Dharwar-age iron ore in Bastar (Bailadila) and limestone in the central basin. See Minerals, Energy and Industry.
- Tropical latitude, monsoon climate: most of the state lies south of the Tropic of Cancer, so it has a tropical monsoon climate with hot summers and most rain from June to September.
- Watershed position: the northern hills, the central plain and the southern plateau send water to four sea-bound systems (Ganga, Mahanadi, Godavari, Narmada) and the Brahmani. This makes the state an upstream party in interstate water issues, such as the Mahanadi dispute with Odisha.
- Border regions: the long, forested southern and eastern borders with Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra need interstate coordination on forests, rivers and internal security.

Level 3: Mains Answer Writing
Q1. Describe the geographical location and extent of Chhattisgarh. (60 words)
Q2. “Chhattisgarh’s location explains much of its economy and its challenges.” Discuss. (150–200 words)
Intro: Placed in east-central India on the ancient Peninsular block, Chhattisgarh (1,35,192 km²) is landlocked and borders seven states.
Body:
- Mineral wealth: Gondwana coal in the north (Korba, Mand-Raigarh), iron ore in Bastar (Bailadila), limestone in the central basin. These support power, steel and cement.
- Central connectivity: the Howrah–Mumbai rail axis and access to eastern ports help bulk industry, though being landlocked raises logistics costs.
- Tropical monsoon climate: most of the state lies south of the Tropic of Cancer. Rain-fed paddy dominates the central plain (“rice bowl”).
- Upstream river position: the Mahanadi, Indravati and Son-system rivers begin or flow here first, creating irrigation potential and interstate disputes (Mahanadi with Odisha).
- Forested border belts: the remote southern and eastern borders with Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra need interstate coordination on forests and security.
Conclusion: Location is both a resource and a responsibility. It needs value addition to minerals, efficient water use and interstate cooperation.
