Economy

Basic Concepts and National Income

CGPSC Economy notes: GDP, GNP and NNP, measuring national income, India's 2022-23 base year, and the sectors of India's and Chhattisgarh's economy.

Chapter Overview

National income (राष्ट्रीय आय) is the starting point of the Economy syllabus. Every later chapter, from planning and budgets to poverty and the external sector, uses the same vocabulary: GDP, GNP, NNP, GVA, factor cost, base year, real growth, per capita income. This chapter builds that vocabulary, shows how India’s National Statistics Office measures it, and explains which sectors produce India’s and Chhattisgarh’s output.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Define GDP, GNP (GNI), NDP and NNP and move between them using NFIA, depreciation and net indirect taxes
  • Explain market price, basic price and factor cost, and why India reports GVA at basic prices
  • Distinguish nominal and real GDP and use the GDP deflator
  • Describe the product, income and expenditure methods and what is included or excluded
  • Recall the history of estimation in India (Naoroji → V.K.R.V. Rao → Mahalanobis Committee → CSO → NSO) and the 2022–23 base-year revision
  • Classify activities into primary, secondary and tertiary sectors and explain India’s services-led structure
  • Analyse Chhattisgarh’s GSDP: an industry-heavy output mix with a farm- and forest-dependent workforce

Prerequisites

  • No earlier Economy chapter is needed. Comfort with percentages helps: Basic Numeracy.

Where It Is Asked

PaperWhat to expect
Prelims P-I (Part 1, India GS)Definitions and relationships (GNP = GDP + NFIA, NNP at FC = national income), “which is included in national income”, product vs production taxes, sector of an activity, history of estimation (Naoroji, Rao, Mahalanobis), base year. Statement-based and match-the-following formats are common
Mains P-V (GS-III), Economy sectionShort answers (GDP vs GNP, value added method, organised vs unorganised) and analytical answers (GDP vs welfare, base-year revision, structural transformation, Chhattisgarh’s economy)
Exam focus
  • High-yield: the “three switches” from GDP at MP to NNP at FC; GVA at basic prices (since 2015); the 2022–23 base year (27 February 2026); transfer payments excluded; mining = primary sector.
  • Common mistakes: assuming GNP > GDP for India; counting remittances or pensions in national income; calling construction a service; calling agriculture Chhattisgarh’s largest sector by output.
  • Chhattisgarh angle for Mains: GSDP and per capita income from the state’s Economic Survey (with year and estimate type); the gap between industry’s share of GSDP and agriculture’s share of jobs; minor forest produce and mining in the state’s accounts.
