Industries and Transport
CGPSC Geography notes: industrial regions, major industries, roads, railways, waterways, ports, air and pipelines, with Chhattisgarh's links.
Chapter Overview
Industries (उद्योग) turn India’s minerals and crops into goods, and transport (परिवहन) carries raw materials to factories and goods to markets and ports. This chapter explains why factories cluster in a few regions, where the major industries stand, and how roads, railways, waterways, airways and pipelines tie the economy together. Chhattisgarh fits into every part: Bhilai and Korba are textbook industrial regions, Bilaspur heads a railway zone, and the Raipur–Visakhapatnam corridor is giving the landlocked state a road to the sea.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Apply the factors of industrial location (raw material, power, market, labour, policy) to any plant
- Name India’s 8 major industrial regions and place Chhattisgarh’s Durg–Raipur and Bilaspur–Korba among the 13 minor ones
- Match steel plants with state, foreign partner and year; explain the location of cotton, jute, sugar, cement and aluminium
- Recall road classes and projects (Golden Quadrilateral, N–S/E–W corridors, Bharatmala, PMGSY) and railway basics (gauges, zones, DFCs)
- Learn the national waterways, the 12 major ports, UDAN and the main pipelines
- Write Mains answers on industrial concentration, the sugar industry’s shift and logistics, with a Chhattisgarh angle
Prerequisites
- Minerals and Energy Resources — the raw-material base of heavy industry
- Agriculture — cotton, jute and sugarcane for agro-industries
- Physiography of India — the terrain that shapes routes

| 2 | Major Industries of India | Iron and steel plants, cotton, jute, sugar (southward shift), cement, aluminium, fertilisers, refining, automobiles and IT; Chhattisgarh’s industries at a glance |
| 3 | Roads and Railways | Road classes, NH numbering, Golden Quadrilateral, Bharatmala, PMGSY; gauges, zones, DFCs, Konkan Railway; SECR and Chhattisgarh’s highways |
| 4 | Waterways, Ports, Air Transport and Pipelines | NW-1 to NW-5, the 12 major ports, Vadhavan and Vizhinjam, Sagarmala, UDAN, Chhattisgarh’s airports, oil and gas pipelines |

Where It Is Asked
| Paper | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Prelims P-I (Part 1, India GS) | Plant–place–partner matches, industrial-region features, NH and corridor end points, railway gauges and zone headquarters, national waterway routes, port superlatives, scheme names (Bharatmala, Sagarmala, UDAN). Chhattisgarh items (SECR, Bhilai, BALCO, airports) also appear in the state part |
| Mains P-V (GS-III), Geography of India and Chhattisgarh | Short answers (location of an industry, a port’s importance, DFCs) and longer analytical answers (concentration of industry and regional imbalance, sugar’s southward shift, inland water transport, logistics and the Raipur–Visakhapatnam corridor) |
- High-yield: Bhilai–USSR, Rourkela–West Germany, Durgapur–UK; Hugli = jute; Golden Quadrilateral 5,846 km; N–S and E–W crossing at Jhansi; NW-1 Prayagraj–Haldia 1,620 km; Kandla tidal, Ennore corporate, JNPA container.
- Common mistakes: treating Durg–Raipur as a major region; saying sugar shifts north; calling Vizhinjam a major port; mixing up the two DFCs.
- Chhattisgarh angle for Mains: Durg–Raipur and Bilaspur–Korba regions; SECR at Bilaspur; Raipur–Visakhapatnam corridor (NH-130CD); four airports; the Mumbai–Nagpur–Jharsuguda gas pipeline.
